Article: Sociocultural context of exclusive breastfeeding in Africa: A narrative review

When it comes to babies in any country there is always the same question, what do I feed my baby? Some mothers choose to breast feed, and some mothers choose to use formula, but is there actually any difference? However with that question, another question comes to light, why do over 200 million children suffer from malnutrition despite the abundance of human milk? The starvation rate is high at 40% of children in Africa being exclusively breast fed. One of the issues found during this study was the use of prelacteal feeding, which is where they give the baby other foods, such as water, formula, and even honey before breastfeeding to give the mother a break after childbirth. This can lead to many health issues in the child, including water intoxication. However in the conclusion there was no real evidence to support the argument that breast feeding was the solution or problem.

In my opinion however, I think they didn't take some things into account, such as how large Africa as a continent is and the fact that there are many, many adults who die from starvation in other countries in the continent as a whole, like Ethiopia, meanwhile in other countries like Uganda, food is more abundant and the malnutrition rates are lower. I personally think that breastfeeding is bad, and I don't support feeding the baby anything but breastmilk directly after birth because it can cause some issues after birth.

Material Culture Lab

In class we looked at some artifacts regarding the historical culture of our area in Florida. Sadly I lost my photos of the pottery but I can describe them, some looked like birds and I believe one looked like two people on a bowl, but anyway the importance of them were beyond just using them as something to store food or water, some were traditional from what I remember representing a family I believe which was the bowl, then the pots which were designed like birds, which I assume was to be a visual of certain types of birds that were in the area, like an artistic visual to show off the species.

As I mentioned I think the one bowl was to represent a joining of a family. That was at the start of the year and all I can really remember, I apologize
