Article:  Pet- Human Relationships: Dogs versus Cats

Usually a conversation starter on a date tends to be something simple and easy, like what's your favorite food, or what's your favorite color, or are you a cat person or a dog person? However, that question can mean a lot more than you think, mentioning what kind of pets you have could reveal more than you intend to. For example owners with cats and dogs have better physical health than non owners or owners of a whole other type of pet, fewer also visit the doctor more often than non owners, and tend to be less lonely. There are some reports that show a difference between dog owners and non dog owners, such as better mental health, loneliness and social health. With cats however little is known about the relationships between them and their owners.

Overall however, it is said that having a pet makes someone's life a lot better, making them feel less lonely, greatly help their mental and physical health, and even improve their social life. I can greatly agree with this as a pet owner myself. For instance my pet cat is my best friend, and my old dog Bret (may he rest in peace), was my only real friend in middle school and high school.

Bay County Animal Services

In class we had our guest speakers, who were all apart of a service in animal care and services, come in and tell us a bit about their career. A few things I remember from the discussion was some of the services they offered to pet owners, such as being a non profit organization that does emergency surgeries for animals, does spay and neuter for adoption, and helps take in surrendered animals. With the article I read, this was mentioned, where covid was a massive contribution to a mass amount of animals being surrendered due to owners not being able to support themselves and their pets. Sadly with this large influx of surrendered pets, the mental health decline was also in a probable decline, with that, some counties had a high influx of cat and dog euthanasia. What also is still mentionable, is that cats are still on a high influx into shelters, making about 57% of animals entering the shelter. This means that cats are also being euthanized more often compared to other animals.

Water Quality

I looked into the St. Joseph Bay report card. When looking at the report card, I gathered that from 2021 to 2023, all check markers were green (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Chlorophyll and Feal Coliform). Possible sources of nutrients and bacteria are likely to stem from sources such as; Sewage waste, Animal waste, Incompatible agricultural practices, Fertilizer overuse, Atmospheric Deposition, and Stormwater, and all the individual station trends were all passing the criteria.
